Mr. O'Brien-Butler, a well-known Irish composer, retained the services of Mr. Pickeman of Portmarnock, to lay out a nine-hole course on his estate at Kilmashogue in 1909. It was a proprietary club and relatively inaccessible. The club foundered and many of its members left and formed Grange Golf Club, including its then President.
Golf was not played at Kilmashogue after 1911 until a new club was founded in 1994, the main mover being Peter Jackson.
